Woman Dies While Trying to Save Dog
Hartford, Connecticut — A woman dies while trying to rescue her dog from a house fire.
Firefighters sifted through what remained of the apartment early Wednesday morning.
Witnesses told reporters that the woman had made it out of the burning building safely, but then went to look for her dog.
“As she went in to search for her pet, the smoke got her disoriented and she ended up in the apartment on fire,” said Hartford Fire Chief Edward Casares.
Firefighters battled the intense smoke and flames, and then searched the six apartments, where they found the victim, a woman in her 30s.
“We had the entire street lined with fire trucks, ambulances and stretchers. There was just smoke billowing out of the building. It was incredible,” said Katherine Frias of Hartford.
The fire appears to have been accidental, but is still being investigated.
This is the second deadly fire in Connecticut’s capital city in less than a week. Early Saturday morning, crews responded to an apartment building on Albany avenue. The man living on the third floor died.
First investigators have ruled that fire as arson and they are also investigating a homocide connected to the case.
“I know the people in the neighborhood. It’s scary. I found out this morning that someone died. It’s a little overwhelming,” Frias said.
