PPH Says Cleaning Products Can Be Toxic To Your Pet
Before starting your spring cleaning, consider what cleaning products you have and check labels to see if they should be ” kept out of reach of children.”
The Pet Poison Helpline (PPH) says that alkaline or strong acidic cleaners are the most dangerous for pets. This list includes lye, drain cleaners, lime/calcium/ rust removers, and toilet bowl cleaners. as per “independent.com”
The helpline feels that most cleaners, in small doses, are safe. This list includes spot removers, glass cleaners, and many surface cleaners. They can, however, still cause vomiting and mild diarrhea even if ingesting a small amount.
They could also irritate your pet`s skin. Keep all products labeled “danger” or “keep out of the reach of children” locked up and out of your pet`s reach.
Dr. Justine Lee, Associate Director of Veterinary Services at PPH says other pets can also be at risk by stating ” Birds have a unique respiratory anatomy called air sacs, which results in particular sensitivity to fragrances and aerosolized chemicals.” These products should not be used in the same room as the birds are in.
The PPH also reports it is a myth that the Swiffer Wet-Jets are toxic as there is no evidence to suggest this. You should always let all floors dry before giving your pet access to them.
One of the best ways to keep your pet safe is to make your own cleaning products. Here are a few recipes :
All-Purpose Spray Cleaner
1/2 teaspoon laundry detergent
A dab of environmentally friendly liquid soap
Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake until the laundry detergent is dissolved. Spray and wipe with a clean rag.
Window Cleaner
1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups water
Put all ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake and use as you would a commercial cleaner.
Furniture Polish
1/2 teaspoon oil like Olive or Jojoba, preferably from the health food store
1/4 cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice
Mix all ingredients in a glass jar. Dab a soft cloth in liquid and wipe onto wood furniture. Cover jar and store indefinitely. NOTE: The trick is not to use too much oil!
