Alternative Medicine; Algae For Pet Health

Written by Melissa Sutton | April 8, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Dr. Richard Palmquist knew nothing about algae, or it`s benefits, when he was in veterinary training. He first came in contact with it in 1983, as a conventional vet. He diagnosed an Irish Setter with diabetes and the owner asked the doctor if he knew any way to reverse the dog`s condition.

When Dr. Palmquist told the man no, he scolded the doctor for not being more interested in a cure rather than just managing the disease symptoms. The doctor, a little upset, told the man to see if he could reverse the disease.

To Dr. Palmquist`s astonishment, three months later, the dog was diabetes-free. So the doctor asked the owner what he did to cure his dog of the disease.

The owner replied ” I did a medical literature search and found several things. After considering my options, I went to a local holistic physician and we discussed diabetes and he recommended that I cut the dog`s carbohydrates, increase his vegetables and protein, and give him algae.”  as per  “huffingtonpost.com”

But as a conventional vet, Dr. Palmquist wrote it off as the dog just got over the condition, a sort of miracle, so the speak. But soon, he did become interested in alternative medicine.

Research shows these facts about algae; When people with type 2 diabetes were fed the algae Spiralina for 12 weeks, the results showed improved dyslipidemia, reduced oxidative damage, stabilized blood pressure in hypertensive patients and improved patients antioxidant profiles.

Algae is rich in  calcium, therefore, could protect against osteoporosis. It also has high levels of chromium and gamma-linoleic acid.

Only one year ago, the supplement Phycocyanobilin (PCB) from algae, has been utilized in the prevention and control of diabetes. Algae seems to activate stem cells necessary for healing.

Some forms of algae release toxins that are dangerous and algae grown in contaminated waters can contain environmental toxins like heavy metals and pesticides. Get informed before using any nutritional supplement!
