For Pet Lovers That Love Hummingbirds; How To Attract Them!

Written by Melissa Sutton | April 22, 2011 at 6:01 pm

Many pet owners love most all animals and enjoy attracting different wildlife to their yard, like butterflies, blue birds, hummingbirds, purple martins, and even ladybugs! To many, it feels like having a  ‘pet hummingbird’ or ‘pet butterflies’.

Today, I offer some great info on how to attract hummingbirds to your yard. Here is a short list of plants and trees that will attract them naturally to your yard: FLOWERS: Cardinal Flower, Lantana, Columbine, Fuchsias, Impatiens, Coral-Bells, Hollyhocks, Penstemen, Petunia, Flowering Tobacco, Geranium, and Begonia. SHRUBS: Azaleas, Butterfly Bush, Flowering Quince, Honeysuckle, and Weigela.

TREES: Flowering Crab, Tulip Popular, Locust, Eucalyptus, Vines Honeysuckle, Morning Glory, Trumpet Creeper, and Trumpet Honeysuckle. Here is some great advice on how to have and care for a hummingbird feeder, and you can also visit “birdwatchers.com” for more info.

To stop ants at the feeder, you can get an any guard to attach to the feeder though most feeders come with an ant guard already on it. To stop bees, try these; Feeders by Best 1; Aspects; or Droll Yankee. Even on these ‘bee proof’ feeders, if you see bees at it, simply wipe off the feeder where the hummingbirds “lapped” up the nectar with a wet cloth to clean it and the bees will go away.

The feeder itself, should be cleaned every 3 or 4 days and more often in scorching heat. Look for signs of mold( black spots), and clean feeder with a bottle brush is necessary. Don`t use harsh detergents. If  feeder is washed out when changing the ‘nectar’ with very hot water, this should be enough to prevent mold.

Don`t fill it more than half full. Put your feeder(s) near flowers or hanging baskets of blooming plants or tie a red ribbon on the feeder.

A simple nectar recipe is: 1 Part Sugar; 4 Parts Water; Boil 1 to 2 minutes( until sugar is dissolved) and let cool. Store in refrigerator. You should NOT use red food coloring/dye as this is harmful to the birds.

You should put feeders out about 5 to 10 days before you expect to see them and take them down two weeks after you have seen the last Hummingbird. Happy Humming!
