How About A UV Aquarium Sterilizer For Your Fish Tank?

Written by Melissa Sutton | May 17, 2011 at 3:14 pm

It`s a great idea to add a UV aquarium sterilizer to your tank but this should be in addition to your normal aquarium filtration system and should be the last filtration process. This is because if it goes through the normal filter first, it will catch the solids leaving cleaner water for the sterilizer thus providing a more purified result.

This sterilizer kills viruses, algae, bacteria and parasites with it`s ultraviolet bulbs. This tool does a superb job at keeping the water in pristine condition. They do such a super job that many corporations use this method for cleaning/purifying drinking water on a commercial level and also to kill algae in outdoor ponds.

You probably have more than one fish tank filter cleaning the water so it is extremely important for the UV aquarium sterilizer to be the last filtration process because you want the normal filtration system to remove all the solids from the water first. If the bulb is not too old, it will work well. You also need to control the flow rate of the water and clean the quartz sleeve to make sure it stays efficient.  as per  www.articlesfactory.com

When the bulb starts to lose it`s effectiveness, it is time to change it, usually twice a year will work. You can find bulbs from 8 watts to 130 watts and the higher  wattage will give you better cleaning. If you use a lower wattage bulb, you will have to have a lower flow rate for it to work efficiently. The slower flow rate is more effective at killing algae, parasites and bacteria. For example, a sterilizer with a 15-watt bulb will kill the algae and bacteria at a 120gph flow rate but to also kill the parasites, you should decrease the flow to 75 gph.

The quartz sleeve is situated where the UV bulb fits into the device. Most people forget about the quartz sleeve so get a little more expensive sterilizer that has a wiper handle attached to the outside of the unit for quick and easy cleaning without having to take the sterilizer apart. This tool is superb for a salt water tank. For more info on UV aquarium sterilizers you can visit : http://fish-tank-filters.org
