Do You Want Another Freshwater Aquarium Fish? Consider The Flowerhorn Cichlid, Part1!

If you are looking for a freshwater aquarium fish for your tank, you should think about getting a Flowerhorn Cichlid. This beautiful fish is very popular among aquarists, so here`s some vital information to keep your Flowerhorn healthy.

This fish originated from Central and South America, so you should set up their tank as close to their natural habitat as possible. Know that Flowerhorns will grow to around 500mm. in length. Acrylic tanks are recommended as they are lightweight, leak proof and provide exceptional clarity.

Once you have the tank, you will need to choose a background. Choose one that is close to their natural environment. For the bottom of the tank, you should use pebbles, gravel and stones, for a filtration tool as well as to help smooth and polish the Flowerhorn`s teeth, as they dig, shove and carry these pebbles.

Keep in mind that their teeth are extremely sharp, so if you can help take to edge off of them, it will result in less injuries when mating and fighting season begins. When you put the pebbles in the tank, expect to see them moving around the tank because Flowerhorns build their nests by moving the pebbles around form one place to another. You should NOT have any unnatural ornaments, like a sunken pirate chest, etc., because they can cause accidental cuts and injuries to your fishes. This is because they have fierce territorial behaviors and fights are very common with these fishes.

For lighting, you should use a full spectrum light and leave it on from 4 to 8 hours a day, to maintain the color development of your Flowerhorn. Be aware if you have live plants, they will require no less than 8 hours of light a day.

It is also advised to put the tank where it can get at least 1 hour of indirect sunlight each day. If you are properly doing water changes and water quality management, this amount of sunlight will not cause your water to turn green from algae growth.
