Would You Like To Start Beekeeping? Here`s How To Handle Them!
If you want to start a bee hive, you should know your bees will sting any intruder so you will have to learn how to handle them, so as not to get stung as often. First is to check them on days that are bright and hot, with no wind. On these days, the older bees should be out searching for food. These bees might stay in on colder, showery, windy days.
Keep in mind that if there is an abundance of nectar, they won`t need to search as much as if there is a lack of nectar. You can supply them with sugar syrup, though not all the time. The best time to check the bees is in the Spring as there are not many at the hive.
Usually bees will tolerate you managing the hive for only 10 to 15 minutes and it is not a good idea to keep the hives open any longer than you absolutely need to! Never draw out brood checks and if the bees start to get noisy or worried, shut up the hive.
When there`s honey in the combs, you could possibly magnetize robber bees unless there is an over abundance of nectar. Once robbing starts, it is extremely difficult to stop! as per http://michaellundy.articlealley.com
You need to have a lighted smoker that omits cool smoke when managing your bee colony and before you unhook the hives, you need to puff smoke into the entrance of the hive. Keep moving on to the other colonies to give the bees time to react to the smoke. While closely inspecting your colonies, keep the smoker near you, in case you need it.
If several of the bees are looking at you, you can make them break up by puffing smoke on them several times. While around your bees, move slowly and easily, so you don`t startle them! Be very easy when putting the cover back on the hive as bees are very sensitive/receptive to vibrations.
If you are taking the cover off, start at the rear or the wall of the hive and never jerk the hive. Remove the frame near the outside to be checked. If there is no worry of robbing, lean the frame against the outside of the hive, so you have more room to work. If there is a possibility of robbing, put cover back on hive and never leave a frame out in the open.
When checking all boxes, keep all boxes covered except the one you are checking. When you need to take out a frame, pry it loose with the hive tool and try not to scrape the bees onto the next frame. Be very gentle! If you scrape the comb, leave the bits and pieces in the box/hive and only scrape combs that are in the way, because it annoys the bees.
