From ASPCA Comes Sage Advice For Your Pet`s Thanksgiving Feast!
Here is some superb advice for what and what not to feed your pet on Thanksgiving, from the ASPCA. If you plan on feeding your pet some turkey, make sure it is well-cooked and boneless. Don`t offer them raw or undercooked turkey as it could have the harmful bacteria, Salmonella.
Next is Sage and although it makes Thanksgiving dressing taste wonderful,it and many other herbs have essential oils and resins that can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets, if eaten in large quantities. The effects of certain essential oils are especially sensitive to cats.
Next is Bread Dough, which you should NEVER give your pet! ASPCA experts have determined that when raw bread dough is ingested, the animal`s body heat causes the dough to rise in his stomach. While expanding, the pet may experience vomiting, severe stomach pain and bloating. This can become life-threatening, so you will have to get them to the vet pronto! It may require surgery to fix the problem.
Next is Cake and you must be sure to keep your pet away from the batter, especially if it contains raw eggs, as this can also lead to Salmonella poisoning. To be honest, it is not a good idea to give them any kind of sweets, like what we eat, but you can find pet food recipes for them, so that you can still let them have a sweet treat, but healthier.
Having said that, there`s nothing wrong with giving them a TASTE of Sweet Potato Pie or your Mashed Potatoes, but remember, a taste of this and a taste of that will add up fast, so don`t overindulge your pet, as they could end up with an upset tummy, or worse, an inflammatory condition of the Pancreas, called Pancreatitis.
It is still best to keep them on their regular diet, to prevent these issues. A good idea to help control how much you give them is to fill a Kong Toy once or twice with some Turkey, Sweet Potatoes and Green Beans and they`ll work for hours, to retrieve their yummy treat!
