Celebrate Thanksgiving By Giving The Turkey A Break! Keep One As A Pet; The ‘How To`s”

Written by Melissa Sutton | November 24, 2011 at 7:18 pm

Instead of cooking a turkey for Thanksgiving this year, how about cutting the bird a break and keep one as a pet. Though they`re not as conventional a pet as a dog or cat, they can make excellent companions. Basically, there are two varieties, domestic and wild.

Domestic turkeys are the ones we eat at Thanksgiving, generally the ones raised by turkey farmers. These birds CANNOT fly at all and have been bred solely for the dinner table!

Wild Turkeys are the ones that roam in the wild, across the country and these birds CAN fly. This is the one that you will want to have as a pet. Don`t be alarmed by the word ‘wild’, it just refers to the bird this way because it roams the countryside, wild and free!

Wild Turkeys are much smarter than the domestic ones, therefore can be trained as a pet much easier. When keeping turkeys as pets, the first thing you need to adjust is their diet. Instead of giving them foods to fatten them up, like you would for the dinner table, you want to give them a feed mix to make them stronger and healthier.

Next, you will need to arrange your yard to accommodate the turkey`s coop. These are VERY curious animals, so NO danger zones, such as open holes or chicken wire.

The last thing you need to do is interact with your bird! This is the most important one, because turkeys are very social! Once you get to know your turkey, you will see how he returns his feeling of friendship to you.  as per  http://andrewgrey.articlealley.com

These bright and social birds are praised by many animal welfare groups for being superb companions! This started way back when Abraham Lincoln`s son kept one as a pet, in the White House! People who have turkeys as pets declare they are extremely intelligent and friendly.
