For The Christmas Season; Help & Information From The Pet Poison Helpline(R)
If you have never heard of this helpline, on their website they state “Pet Poison Helpline is a 24-hour animal poison control service available throughout the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean, for pet owners and veterinary professionals who require assistance with treating a potentially poisoned pet.
We have the ability to help every poisoned pet, with all types of poisoning, 24 hours a day. Our knowledge and expertise of pet poisons will put your mind at ease when dealing with a potential emergency. In order to provide this critical service, please be advised that there is a $35 per incident fee, payable by credit card. This fee covers initial consultation as well as all follow-up calls associated with the management of the case.”
The reason they must charge a fee is because there is no public funding to help run animal poison control centers. They also contend “We`re the only poison control with board-certified veterinary internal medicine (DACVIM), emergency critical care (DACVECC) specialists and veterinary toxicologists (DABUT, DABT)- which is imperative if your pet is critically ill from a potential poisoning.”
They have managed more than 750,000 cases involving pet poisonings. If you`re calling from the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, you can reach Pet Poison Helpline at 1-877-416-7319. Other Caribbean islands can call 011-1-952-853-1716. For the U.S., the number is 1-800-213-6680.
They not only help with cat and dog poisoning, but avian, small mammals, large animals and exotic species as well.
The top 10 Dog Poisons are; Chocolate, Insect Bait Stations, Rodenticides, like mouse & rat poisons, Fertilizers, Xylitol, such as Advil(R) or Motrin(R) or generic form, Acetaminophen, such as Tylenol(R) or generic form, Silica gel packs, Amphetamines, such as ADD/ADHD drugs, and Household cleaners.
