The Egyptian Mau
The Egyptian Mau is possibly the oldest known feline breed. It is the only cat with spots rather than stripes like our American breeds. Their ancestry can be traced back to the time of the Pharaohs. “Mau” actually means “cat” in the ancient Egyptian language.
These felines have distinctive markings of an Egyptian scarab between the ears, and their eyes are a bright, expressive green. The recognized colors are silver, bronze, and smoke. They are very friendly, but somewhat standoffish with strangers. They have a very sweet, almost bird-like voice and they make great indoor cats.
This is a most fascinating breed, not only because of its past history with Egyptians, but because of its charming personality and unusual appearance.
Their history in North America began with the exportation of the breed in 1956. An extremely intelligent animal, the Mau places great importance on family, both human and their own, and they are surprisingly loyal. They are somewhat active and like to express their happiness vocally.
If you see these beautiful felines, you will realize why the Egyptians were so devoted to them. They easily steal the prize for most unique cat.
