3 New Breeds Now Accepted by AKC
There are three breeds of canine that are now accepted by the AKC (American Kennel Club): the Icelandic Sheepdog, the Leonberger, and the Cane Corso.
The Icelandic Sheepdog is a breed originating from dogs brought to Iceland by the Vikings. They are commonly used to herd sheep, hence the name.
These dogs are tough, energetic, hardy and agile. They are alert and will give visitors an enthusiastic welcome. Friendly and cheerful, the Icelandic Sheepdog is inquisitive, playful, and unafraid. They do great in families with small children.
The Leonberger, also known as the “nanny dog,” has a wonderful temperament, one of their most notable characteristics. Well-socialized and trained, he is self-assured, insensitive to noise, submissive to family members, loves children, and is self-disciplined. These dogs have been trained to jump out of rescue helicopters.
The Cane Corso, an Italian breed, resembles a large Pit-Bull, or Mastiff. They have even, stable temperaments and form a close attachment with the primary owner. They socialize easy with humans but have more trouble with other dogs. They are historically working dogs and need abundant exercise. They are at their best when they have a job to do.
These three breeds have been around for some time, some even going to almost extinction. The American Kennel Club has finally decided to recognize these breeds as purebreds. To dog lovers everywhere, these three breeds are a wonderful addition to a household, and do great with children.
