Homemade Doggie Treat Recipes
Right now, when times are tough, cooking your own dog treats can save you lots of money.
Commercial dog treats are loaded with carbohydrate and fat grams, not to mention expensive. Here are some great recipes for your precious pooch to drool over.
Since it’s almost Halloween, here is a great recipe just right for the season.
Pumpkin Cookies
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup pumpkin, canned
1 tblsp. brown sugar
½ tsp. ground cinnamon and nutmeg
4 tblsp. Crisco
1 egg
½ cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cut in shortening. Beat egg with milk and pumpkin and combine with flour, mixing well. Stir until soft dough forms. Drop by tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes. Let cool and serve.

Cheesy Dog Cookies
2 cups flour
1 ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese
¼ tsp. garlic powder
½ cup vegetable oil
4-5 tblsp. water
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine everything except water. Whisk in food processor until consistency of cornmeal. Then add water until mixture forms a ball. Roll into ½ inch thickness and cut into shapes. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for about 10 minutes. Cool and store in refrigerator.

Glazed Chicken Treats
4 cups flour
1 ¼ cup cornmeal
1 can chicken and rice soup
1 egg
2 tblsp. vegetable oil
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together, knead, and roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut into shapes. Place on greased cookie sheet and cook for about 30-40 minutes.
For the glaze: 1 egg, 2 tblsp. milk, and a dash of garlic to free them of fleas.
