Pet Fire Safety

Everyone knows pets are as much part of a family as children, so why not have a safety plan in place for our pets.

One key thing is to prevent the fire from starting in the first place. While dogs have been known for saving the family from the fire, cats start a number of fires. Cats will commonly knock over candles so if you have cats the best bet is to not use candles in rooms where the cats can go.

Now everyone wants to know well how can I keep my pet safe should a fire occur. As a pet lover as well as member of a fire department I can offer a number of tips. Since you as a pet owner will not always be able to be there it is important to make it known that you have pets. There are stickers that can be placed on doors and windows where you can list the number of pets and types of pets in the home, which similar to kids’ stickers. Always it will be good if your pets are used to people so they do not try to hide. Also all the important pet information should be in a fireproof box such as a safe. Also it would be a good idea for the information to also be kept at an office or another safe place so it can be easily located. Also from experience you need to make sure the pets are not so used to going out one door that they will not go out any other door.
