Components

  1. Control Unit (Transmitter): This miniature, battery-powered "remote control" device signals the collar receiver. When you press the transmitter button, its red light flickers and a coded signal is sent to the collar, activating an electronic stimulus. Use the eyelet to attach the transmitter to a lanyard to keep from losing it. Includes an antenna for the transmitter.
  2. Training Collar: Consists of a receiver box attached to a durable nylon strap. The dog receives the stimulus via the collar probes. The power source for the collar receiver is a NiMH rechargeable battery. Typical battery life is 48 to 72 hours of use. For maximum battery life, wait until battery is drained before recharging.
  3. Battery Charger: Recharges the collar's NiMH battery when plugged in to any normal home electrical socket. Usually a battery can be completely recharged in twelve hours.
  4. Collar Probes: Two sets are provided. Use the short probes for shorthaired dogs. Use the longer probes for dogs with long hair.
  5. Test Light: Allows you to make sure the system is working properly. To test, wrap one wire of the test light around each probe to form a bridge and press the transmitter button. The test lamp lights when stimulation is delivered.
  6. Spare Receptacle Covers: To protect the receiver's charging receptacle from dirt and water when the collar is not being charged.
  7. 6 Volt Alkaline Batteries (2): The power source for the handheld transmitter.
  8. Probe Wrench: Use the wrench to change the probe sets if necessary. Always finger-tighten the probes, then turn one additional revolution with the wrench. Check for proper tightness frequently as the probes hold the receiver box on the strap. Do not over-tighten.
  9. DVD: DVD provides important instructions to help you get the most from your remote trainer.
Use of the Free Spirit Digital Trainer

There are two different types of stimulation that can be sent from the transmitter.

  • Continuous stimulation: Pressing the Continuous button on the handheld transmitter sends a signal to the collar receiver. Upon receipt of this signal, the collar probes deliver a continuous electrical stimulus to the dog. Continuous means the stimulation persists as long as the button is pressed, up to 10 seconds. NOTE: As a safety feature, the collar receiver automatically shuts off after 10 seconds of continuous stimulation.
  • Momentary stimulation: Pressing the Momentary button on the transmitter sends a different signal to the collar receiver. Upon receipt of this signal, the collar probes deliver a single brief stimulation.
Before You Begin:
  • Thoroughly read the product owner's manual.
  • Watch the included instructional DVD.
The following tasks must be completed to prepare your new Free Spirit Digital Trainer for operation. Refer to the owner's manual provided for detailed instructions for completing each of these steps.
  1. Install the battery in the handheld transmitter unit.
  2. Set the ID code.
  3. Set the intensity level for the collar's stimulus (always begin at the lowest setting)
  4. Charge the collar receiver battery.
  5. "Match" the transmitter and the collar receiver.
  6. Test the transmitter and the receiver.
  7. Fit the collar to the dog.
  8. Use conventional training methods to teach your dog what commands you expect it to respond to. When the dog understands your commands, only then should you introduce the collar.
